How to Prepare for Your Baby's Cake Smash Session (Tips from a NJ Studio Photographer)
If you've booked a cake smash session, or you're thinking about it, you probably have questions. What should your baby wear? What do you bring? Will they even touch the cake?
After photographing hundreds of first birthdays at our Denville, NJ studio, I've seen it all. And the sessions that go the smoothest always come down to a little preparation and knowing what to expect. Here's what I tell every family before they come in.
Timing is everything
Book your session close to, but not on, your baby's actual birthday. A few weeks before is ideal. This gives us enough time to capture, edit and send back your final images so they are ready for the big day!
Schedule around their best time of day. If they're a morning baby, book a morning session. A tired or hungry baby on set makes for a very short session.
What to bring
You don't need much, but a few things make a real difference:
Extra wipes, a small towel, puffs or Cheerios (great for coaxing a curious eater toward the cake), and a sippy cup for breaks. That's it. We handle everything else.
What to wear (for you!)
Cake smash sessions are delightfully messy by design. Wear something comfortable that you don't mind getting frosting on, because it will happen. Consider it part of the celebration.
The one thing that changes everything
This is the tip most parents don't expect: step back.
At our studio, every cake smash session includes a dedicated studio assistant whose only job is your child's comfort and safety on set. We ask parents to stay close- cheering, making faces, doing whatever makes your baby light up — but to let our assistant handle and guide them on set.
It sounds counterintuitive, but it works. When a parent walks away, babies sometimes get anxious. When they stay right in front of the camera cheering, babies feel safe and stay engaged. The result is happier babies, more genuine smiles, and a session that flows naturally from start to finish.
