Your In Home Newborn Experience Guide
Welcome, I’m Nicolette
Thank you for trusting me with this special season. My goal is to create an effortless, beautifully styled experience from start to finish. This guide will help you feel confident, prepared, and excited for your session.
What to Expect During Your Session
In-home newborn sessions are slow, relaxed, and baby-led.
Session Length
Sessions typically last 1.5–2 hours and include:
Family & Parent Portraits
• Baby portraits
• Parent and baby portraits
• Sibling and family images
• Natural lifestyle moments throughout your home
There Will be plenty of time for:
• Feeding
• Diaper changes
• Soothing
What We Bring
For in-home newborn sessions, the focus is on capturing your family naturally within your home.
We will bring a small selection of swaddles, wraps, and simple accessories to style baby. These pieces are chosen to be soft, timeless, and neutral so they photograph beautifully in your space.
Unlike studio sessions, large props and sets are minimal. Instead, we use the natural environment of your home as the backdrop for your images — such as:
• Your bedroom
• The nursery
• A cozy spot in the living room near a window
This creates photographs that feel personal, authentic, and meaningful to your family.
How to Prepare Before Your Newborn Session
A little preparation before your session can help ensure your baby is sleepy, relaxed, and comfortable, allowing us to capture those peaceful, curled-up newborn portraits.
Keep Baby Awake Before the Session
Try to keep your baby awake for 1–2 hours before your session, if possible.
Gentle stimulation such as talking to them, changing them, or giving them a bath can help keep them awake.
This helps baby arrive ready for a full feeding and a long, sleepy stretch during the session.
Feed Baby Right Before We Begin
A full feeding right before the session starts is one of the best ways to ensure baby settles into a deep sleep.
Dress Baby in a Simple Outfit
Please dress baby in a loose sleeper or zip-up onesie with minimal layers underneath. This allows us to gently transition baby into wraps without disturbing their sleep.
Avoid clothing that must be pulled over baby’s head if possible.
Relax and Enjoy the Experience
Newborn sessions are designed to move at baby’s pace. We allow plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and cuddling throughout the session.
The most important thing you can do is relax and enjoy the experience while we create beautiful portraits of this special time.
A Few Helpful Tips
• Dress baby in a loose sleeper or swaddle before the session
• Turn up the heat slightly to keep baby comfortable
• Have extra diapers and wipes nearby
• Keep a pacifier close (even if baby rarely uses one)
Preparing Your Home
Please don’t worry about having a perfectly clean home. We only photograph in a few small areas.
Before the session, try to:
• Open blinds or curtains to allow natural light in
• Clear clutter from bedside tables or dressers
• Remove phones, water bottles, tissues, etc. from surfaces
• Make the bed with neutral bedding if possible
The most commonly used areas are:
• Master bedroom
• Nursery
• Living room near windows
If you’re unsure about lighting or rooms, I’ll help choose the best spots when I arrive.
What to Have on Hand During the Newborn Session
Your newborn session is designed to be a relaxed and comfortable experience for your family. A few helpful items to consider having ready:
Extra Feeding Supplies
Whether you are nursing or bottle feeding, please bring anything you may need for a full feeding during the session.
A full baby is a sleepy baby, and sleepy babies photograph beautifully.
Pacifier (Even if Baby Doesn’t Normally Use One)
Pacifiers can be very helpful for soothing baby during posing transitions. Even if your baby doesn’t typically take one, having it available can make the session flow more smoothly.
Extra Diapers & Wipes
Accidents are completely normal during newborn sessions. Having a few extra diapers and wipes nearby is always helpful.
A Simple Outfit for Arrival
Dress baby in a loose sleeper or zip-up onesie when we arrive. This allows us to transition baby into wraps without waking them too much.
Sentimental Items (Optional)
If you have a special heirloom, blanket, or meaningful item you would like incorporated into a photo, feel free to bring it along.
Snacks for Parents & Siblings
Newborn sessions require time, so bringing a small snack or drink for yourselves or siblings can be helpful.
What Parents Should Wear for Newborn Photos
Newborn portraits are meant to feel timeless, soft, and focused on connection. Choosing simple, neutral clothing allows the focus to remain on your baby and the love between you.
For Moms
Soft, flowing fabrics photograph beautifully and add an elegant, timeless feel to your portraits.
We recommend:
• Neutral tones such as cream, ivory, beige, soft blush, light gray, or muted pastels
• Flowy dresses or soft knit sweaters
• Simple silhouettes without busy patterns or logos
Many mothers choose to wear a long dress, which photographs beautifully for seated or standing poses with baby.
For Dads
Dads photograph best in simple, classic pieces that complement mom’s outfit.
Great options include:
• Neutral sweaters
• Henley shirts
• Button-down shirts
• Solid t-shirts in soft neutral tones
Colors such as cream, gray, tan, navy, or soft earth tones photograph especially well.
Avoid logos, bright colors, or bold patterns.
For Siblings
For siblings, we recommend clothing that feels soft, neutral, and comfortable.
Lovely options include:
• Simple dresses for girls
• Knit sweaters or neutral tops for boys
• Soft textures and neutral tones
Keeping sibling outfits simple ensures the focus stays on their connection with baby.
Keep It Coordinated, Not Matching
Instead of everyone wearing the same color, choose a soft color palette that coordinates together.
For example:
• Cream + beige + soft gray
• Ivory + light blue + tan
• Cream + blush + light taupe
This creates a cohesive look while keeping your images natural and timeless.
